The Cynthia Silkworm: A Comprehensive Look at Its Biology and Silk Production

The Cynthia silkworm, scientifically known as Philosamia cynthia, is an economically significant insect belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Saturniidae. This fascinating creature, also called the Tsubaki silkworm or Small Tallow silkworm, is valued for its silk production and has a wide geographical distribution across Asia.

1. Geographical Distribution and Subspecies

The Cynthia silkworm is found in several countries including China, Japan, India, North Korea, and Indonesia. In China, its presence is particularly notable in provinces such as Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Sichuan, and Taiwan. The species exhibits considerable diversity, with numerous subspecies adapted to various climatic conditions. These subspecies can be categorized based on their regional distribution, such as those in colder regions and those in Taiwan. The number of chromosomes can also vary, with a general count of 2n=26, but some having 2n=28, particularly the Japanese barnyard silkworm.

2. Morphology and Identification

Adult Cynthia silkworms share a close resemblance to castor silkworms. Both species have wingspans of 13-14 cm. Female moths are typically around 3 cm long, while male moths range from 2.5 to 2.7 cm in length. Their wings are a yellowish-brown color, featuring transparent crescent-shaped markings in the center of both the forewings and hindwings. The forewings also have eye-like patterns at the top and lavender-red coloration outside the outer horizontal line. The primary distinction between the two species lies in the abdominal scale arrangement: Cynthia silkworms have yellowish-brown and white scales arranged longitudinally, while castor silkworms have white and brown scales in horizontal rows. Interestingly, the two species can interbreed, producing fertile hybrid offspring.

3. Life Cycle and Development

The Cynthia silkworm undergoes diapause as a pupa, with adults emerging typically between April and May. The female moth lays yellowish-white eggs with irregular dark spots on the underside of leaves, arranged in an arc, and stacked. After 10-20 days, the larvae hatch, initially black and about 4 mm long. By the second instar, they become yellow-green with black dots and tumor-like protrusions, all covered with white powder. Mature fifth instar larvae lose the white powder and appear light blue.

The larvae are gregarious, clustering mainly on the back of leaves in arcs or ellipses during their early instars. After the third instar, they disperse throughout the host tree. The larval stage lasts about 30-40 days. When mature, the silkworms spin gray-brown, spindle-shaped cocoons with a hole at the top and a slender cocoon handle. Each cocoon weighs approximately 3 grams, with the cocoon layer contributing about 0.3 grams, resulting in a cocoon layer rate of 10-12%.

4. Traditional Silk Production Methods

Traditionally, farmers employ a soil method for silk extraction. This involves soaking the mother cocoon shells (with pupae) in clean water, drying them partially, and then softening them in a warm alkaline solution. The cocoons are then boiled in water for about 4 hours, with the cocoons being turned every hour to facilitate silk loosening. After boiling, the alkali is rinsed off, and the silk is dried for later use. Spinning and weaving are generally performed during the agricultural slack season, and the resulting silk fabric, known as tsubaki, is prized for its strength and durability.

5. Host Plants

The Cynthia silkworm has a varied diet, mainly feeding on the leaves of the Ailanthus altissima tree. It also consumes the leaves of plants such as Chinese tallow, castor, holly, Michelia, paulownia, phoenix tree, and camphor tree. This wide range of host plants contributes to its broad distribution and adaptability.

In conclusion, the Cynthia silkworm is a remarkable insect with significant economic importance. Its silk, produced through traditional methods, is valued for its strength and durability. The detailed life cycle, morphology, and adaptability to various host plants make it a fascinating subject of study.
