Silk, a protein fiber, is commonly used in clothing. Because of its soft and shiny texture, many people appreciate silk. However, silk is a very delicate material, thus cleaning silk clothing, like silk robes for women ,silk robes for men ,silk pajamas for women ,silk pajamas for men ,silk nightgowns for women, should be particularly careful to avoid shrinkage or damage.
Silk can be shrunk if is pre-washed for more than 5 minutes. Do not soak silk in water for a long time before washing for that can cause its fibers to tighten and twist. Silk washed in hot water also shrinks. Silk clothes will also decrease in size if dried in a hot dryer.
If silk is not marked as “dry cleaning only”, hand washing is best and safest way for you. First, soak silk products in warm water for 2 or 3 minutes, and then use mild soap to clean it, and gently rinse clothes in cold water. To remove the soap, you can add a few teaspoons of vinegar to the rinse water. To give it a soft feel, you can put conditioner in the last bucket of cold water.
Although hand washing is the recommended method of washing silk, some people may like using the washing machine with the “fine” cycle and the fastest dehydration cycle. Note: do not use detergent with brighteners or bleach. On the contrary, you should use a mild soap, like Woolite. Or, you can put the silk in a mesh bag for extra protection.
- Do not wring or twist the silk. Otherwise, the silk garment will lose its form.
- Gently roll your clothes in a clean towel, and then place it on a hanger to dry it.
- Do not leave your clothes in direct sunlight, for this could damage material.
- When ironing silk, turn the garment inside out first.
