What Is Silk Made From
What is silk made out of?
Silk is made of cocoons, and most silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm, raised on farms. Silkworms are fed with mulberry leaves. Silkworms spin cocoons and enter their pupal stage. Silkworms secrete silk as a liquid from two glands in their head. The cocoons are placed in boiling water while silkworms are still in their pupal stage, killing silkworms and unraveling the cocoons to produce silk thread.
