Sleep Loss Affect Life Expectancy
A study of more than 20,000 sets of twins for 22 years found people who sleep less than 7 hours a day had a 17 percent to 24 percent increased a risk of death, compared with those getting 8 hours. And, as the use of sleep medications, a 33 percent boost in mortality risk.
Compared with people who get the recommended six to eight hours of sleep, people who sleep less than 6 hours per night are 12 percent more likely to die earlier according to a separate European metastudy. Adults need at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep each day to be well rested and to perform at their best. Children and adolescents need considerably more than that.
Medical conditions came as a result of chronic sleep loss. Long-term sleep loss leads to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension, and other diseases. Theoretically, any number of serious illnesses can be initiated from routine sleep loss because sleep loss weakens the immune system.
Can Sleeping Too Much Impact Your Lifespan?
European metastudy also found that sleeping more than nine hours per night was associated with early death. However, sleeping too much doesn’t have a negative impact on the body. Compared with people who work long hours, those who already battle chronic illnesses are more likely to spend more time at home and in bed.
Once you crawl into bed at night, one of the biggest challenges to getting adequate sleep is being able to fall asleep quickly. Make sure your bedroom is dark, cool, and free from outside noise.
