How to Get Rid of Fishy Smell from Raw Silk

by Elizabeth / Friday, 16 September 2022 / Published in Silk Care & Wash
Raw Silk

Raw silk, prized for its luxurious texture and natural sheen, can sometimes carry an unpleasant fishy odor. This smell is often due to the presence of sericin, a gummy protein produced by silkworms. While sericin is typically removed during the degumming process of silk production, raw silk retains this substance, which can contribute to the odor.

Fortunately, several methods can effectively eliminate the fishy smell from raw silk without damaging the delicate fibers. Here’s a comprehensive guide:

1. Airing and Sunlight

The simplest approach: is to air out the raw silk in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors on a sunny day. The fresh air and sunlight can help to naturally dissipate the odor. Avoid direct sunlight for prolonged periods, as it can fade the color of the silk.

2. Gentle Hand Washing

  • Hand washing is the safest method for cleaning raw silk. Use lukewarm water and a mild, pH-neutral detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach, which can damage the silk fibers.
  • Submerge the silk in the soapy water and gently agitate it for a few minutes. Avoid rubbing or twisting the fabric, as this can cause damage.
  • Rinse thoroughly with cool, clear water until all traces of soap are gone.
  • To further neutralize odors, add a few drops of white vinegar to the final rinse water. Vinegar is a natural deodorizer and will not harm the silk.
  • Gently squeeze out excess water, being careful not to wring or twist the fabric.
  • Lay the silk flat on a clean towel and roll it up to absorb more moisture.
  • Unroll the towel and lay the silk flat to air dry completely. Avoid using a dryer, as the high heat can damage the silk.

3. Baking Soda Soak

  • Baking soda is a natural odor absorber and can be effective in removing the fishy smell from raw silk.
  • Dissolve half a cup of baking soda in a basin of lukewarm water.
  • Submerge the silk in the solution and let it soak for at least 30 minutes, or even overnight for stubborn odors.
  • Rinse thoroughly with cool, clear water and air dry as described above.

4. Professional Dry Cleaning

  • For valuable or heavily soiled raw silk items, professional dry cleaning is recommended. Dry cleaners have specialized equipment and expertise to clean delicate fabrics safely and effectively. Be sure to inform the dry cleaner about the odor issue so they can take appropriate measures.

Additional Tips

  • Test any cleaning method on an inconspicuous area of the silk first to ensure it doesn’t cause any damage or discoloration.
  • Avoid using scented detergents or fabric softeners, as these can leave a residue on the silk and may not effectively mask the fishy odor.
  • Store raw silk items in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Use breathable storage containers or garment bags to allow for air circulation.

By following these methods, you can effectively eliminate the fishy smell from raw silk and enjoy its natural beauty and luxurious feel.
