How to Hand Wash a Two-Ply Cashmere Sweater

by Elizabeth / Wednesday, 12 October 2022 / Published in Textile Knowledge

Cashmere sweaters are a luxurious investment, prized for their unparalleled softness and warmth. However, their delicate nature requires special care, especially when it comes to washing. Machine washing can lead to shrinkage, felting, and damage to the fibers. Hand washing, when done correctly, is the gentlest and most effective way to maintain the beauty and longevity of your two-ply cashmere sweater. This comprehensive guide will walk you through each step of the process, ensuring your treasured garment stays in pristine condition.

Why Hand Wash Cashmere?

Cashmere fibers are incredibly fine and delicate. The agitation and heat of a washing machine can easily cause them to interlock and felt, resulting in a shrunken, stiff, and less desirable sweater. Hand washing mimics the gentle motion of hand washing, minimizing stress on the fibers and preserving their natural softness.

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather the following supplies:

  • A clean sink or basin
  • Lukewarm water (around 85°F or 30°C)
  • A mild detergent specifically formulated for delicate fabrics or cashmere (e.g., baby shampoo, a wool wash like Eucalan or Soak)
  • A clean, light-colored towel
  • A flat surface for drying

Step-by-Step Hand Washing Instructions

1. Prepare the Washing Basin

Clean your sink or basin thoroughly to remove any residue. Fill it with lukewarm water. It’s crucial to avoid hot water, as it can cause shrinkage.

2. Add the Detergent

Add a small amount of your chosen detergent to the water. A tablespoon is usually sufficient. Gently agitate the water with your hand to distribute the detergent evenly. Avoid creating excessive suds.

3. Submerge the Sweater

Turn your cashmere sweater inside out. This helps protect the outer fibers. Gently submerge the sweater in the soapy water.

4. Gently Wash the Sweater

Gently massage the sweater in the water, focusing on areas that may have more dirt or odor, such as the underarms and collar. Avoid rubbing, twisting, or stretching the fabric. Let it soak for up to 30 minutes, but no longer, as prolonged soaking can damage the fibers.

5. Rinse Thoroughly

Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, lukewarm water. Gently squeeze the sweater to remove the soapy water. Repeat this rinsing process several times until the water runs completely clear. It’s crucial to remove all traces of detergent.

6. Remove Excess Water

Gently press the sweater against the side of the sink or basin to remove excess water. Do not wring or twist the sweater, as this can distort its shape.

7. Roll in a Towel

Lay a clean, light-colored towel on a flat surface. Place the sweater on the towel and gently roll it up, pressing gently to absorb more water.

8. Lay Flat to Dry

Unroll the towel and carefully reshape the sweater on a clean, dry surface. Avoid hanging the sweater, as this can cause it to stretch out of shape. Ensure the sweater is laid flat in its natural shape. Turn the sweater over after a few hours to ensure even drying.

9. Drying Time

Allow the sweater to air dry completely. This may take up to 24 hours or longer, depending on the thickness of the sweater and the humidity. Avoid direct sunlight or heat, as this can damage the fibers.

Dos and Don’ts of Cashmere Care

Do Don’t
Use lukewarm water Use hot water
Use a mild detergent or cashmere wash Use harsh detergents or bleach
Gently massage the sweater Rub, twist, or wring the sweater
Lay flat to dry Hang the sweater to dry
Store folded in a breathable container Store on hangers or in plastic bags

Maintaining Your Cashmere Sweater Between Washes

  • Air out your sweater after each wear.
  • Use a cashmere comb or de-piller to remove any pilling.
  • Store your cashmere sweater folded in a breathable container, such as a cedar chest or cotton bag.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your two-ply cashmere sweater remains soft, luxurious, and beautiful for years to come. Hand washing may seem like a chore, but it’s a small investment of time that will significantly extend the life of your precious garment.
