How to Unshrink a Wool Sweater

by Elizabeth / Tuesday, 11 October 2022 / Published in Textile Knowledge

Shrinking a beloved wool sweater can be heartbreaking. Thankfully, with a little patience and the right technique, you can often restore it close to its original size. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to unshrinking wool sweaters, focusing on gentle methods that protect the delicate fibers.

Understanding Why Wool Shrinks

Wool fibers have scales that interlock when exposed to heat and agitation, causing the fabric to shrink. This is why proper care is crucial. Hot water, aggressive washing machine cycles, and high heat drying are the primary culprits.

The Unshrinking Process: Step-by-Step

This method uses lukewarm water and a gentle conditioner to relax the wool fibers, allowing them to be gently stretched back into shape.

What You’ll Need:

Item Purpose
Lukewarm water Relaxes the wool fibers
Gentle conditioner or wool wash Lubricates the fibers, aiding stretching
Large basin or sink Provides ample space for soaking
Clean towels Absorbs excess water
Flat surface For laying the sweater to dry
Measuring tape (optional) To track progress

The Soaking and Stretching Method:

  1. Fill the basin: Fill your basin or sink with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, as it will further shrink the wool.
  2. Add conditioner: Add a small amount of gentle conditioner or a specialized wool wash to the water. Distribute it evenly.
  3. Submerge the sweater: Turn the sweater inside out and fully submerge it in the water. Gently press it down to ensure it’s completely saturated.
  4. Soak: Let the sweater soak for at least 30 minutes, or up to a few hours for severely shrunken sweaters. This allows the fibers to relax.
  5. Remove excess water: Carefully lift the sweater from the water. Do not wring or twist it, as this can damage the fibers. Gently squeeze out excess water.
  6. Roll in a towel: Lay a clean towel flat and place the sweater on top. Roll the towel up tightly to absorb more water.
  7. Lay flat to dry: Unroll the towel and carefully transfer the sweater to a clean, dry, flat surface.
  8. Gently stretch: While the sweater is still damp, gently stretch it back to its original shape. Pay attention to the length and width, and try to distribute the stretching evenly. You can use a measuring tape to monitor the progress.
  9. Air dry completely: Allow the sweater to air dry completely, turning it occasionally. Avoid direct sunlight or heat, as this can cause further shrinkage.

Tips for Success

  • Patience is key: The unshrinking process takes time, so be patient and avoid rushing.
  • Gentle handling: Always handle the sweater gently, especially when wet, as the fibers are more delicate.
  • Repeat if necessary: If the sweater hasn’t fully returned to its original size after the first attempt, you can repeat the soaking and stretching process.
  • Prevention is best: To avoid shrinkage in the future, always hand wash wool garments in cool water or use a delicate cycle on your washing machine with a suitable wool wash, and always lay them flat to dry. Consider using a protective laundry bag.

Dealing with Different Types of Wool

While this method generally works well for most types of wool, some finer or more delicate wools may require extra care. If you are unsure about the type of wool your sweater is made from, it’s always best to test the method on a small, inconspicuous area first. For extremely delicate wools like cashmere or fine merino, consider professional cleaning.

When to Seek Professional Help

If your sweater is severely shrunken or made from a particularly delicate type of wool, it may be best to consult a professional cleaner specializing in garment restoration. They have the expertise and equipment to handle delicate fabrics and may be able to achieve better results.
