How to Wash Cashmere Sweaters

by Elizabeth / Wednesday, 12 October 2022 / Published in Textile Knowledge

Cashmere is prized for its unparalleled softness, warmth, and luxurious feel. However, this delicate fiber requires special care when washing to maintain its quality and prevent damage. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the proper steps of washing your cashmere sweaters, ensuring they remain a cherished part of your wardrobe for years to come.

1. Understanding Cashmere and Why Gentle Washing is Essential

Cashmere comes from the fine undercoat of Cashmere goats. These fibers are incredibly fine and delicate, making them prone to damage from harsh washing methods. Unlike wool from sheep, cashmere fibers are smoother and lack the coarse scales that make wool more resilient. This is why proper care is crucial.

Feature Cashmere Regular Wool
Fiber Source Undercoat of Cashmere goats Fleece of sheep
Fiber Diameter Very fine (14-19 microns) Coarser (20-30+ microns)
Texture Extremely soft and luxurious Can be coarser or finer depending on breed
Durability Requires gentle handling for long-term wear More durable to regular washing
Warmth Exceptionally warm for its weight Warm, but generally not as warm as cashmere

2. Preparing Your Cashmere Sweater for Washing

Before you begin washing your cashmere sweater, take these essential preparatory steps:

  • Check the Care Label: Always refer to the care label for specific instructions. While most cashmere can be hand-washed, some items may require professional dry cleaning.
  • Pre-treat Stains: If your sweater has any stains, gently pre-treat them before washing. Use a mild detergent or a specialized stain remover for delicate fabrics. Avoid rubbing the stain vigorously, as this can damage the fibers.
  • Turn the Sweater Inside Out: Turning the sweater inside out helps to protect the outer fibers from friction during washing.

3. Hand-Washing Your Cashmere Sweater: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hand-washing is the gentlest method for cleaning cashmere. Follow these steps for best results:

  1. Fill a Basin: Fill a clean basin or sink with lukewarm water (around 85°F or 30°C). Avoid hot water, as it can shrink or damage the fibers.
  2. Add Mild Detergent: Add a small amount of a mild detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics or baby shampoo. Ensure the detergent is fully dissolved in the water before adding the sweater. A good option is a silk detergent like those offered by PandaSilk.
  3. Submerge the Sweater: Gently submerge the sweater in the soapy water. Avoid agitating or rubbing the fabric.
  4. Soak and Gently Swirl: Allow the sweater to soak for about 15-20 minutes. Gently swirl the sweater in the water a few times during the soaking period.
  5. Rinse Thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, lukewarm water. Rinse the sweater thoroughly until all traces of detergent are gone. Avoid wringing or twisting the sweater.
  6. Gently Press Out Excess Water: Gently press out excess water by rolling the sweater in a clean towel. Do not wring or twist the sweater.
Step Description
Prepare Water and Basin Use lukewarm water (around 85°F or 30°C) in a clean basin.
Add Detergent Use a small amount of mild detergent for delicates or baby shampoo. Dissolve fully before adding the sweater.
Submerge and Soak Gently submerge the sweater and soak for 15-20 minutes, gently swirling occasionally.
Rinse Thoroughly Rinse with clean, lukewarm water until no detergent remains.
Remove Excess Water Gently press out water by rolling in a towel. Do NOT wring.

4. Drying Your Cashmere Sweater Correctly

Proper drying is just as important as washing when caring for cashmere.

  1. Lay Flat to Dry: Lay the sweater flat on a clean, dry towel on a flat surface. Reshape the sweater to its original form.
  2. Avoid Direct Heat and Sunlight: Do not tumble dry, hang, or expose the sweater to direct heat or sunlight. These can cause shrinkage, stretching, or discoloration.
  3. Turn Periodically: Turn the sweater over periodically to ensure even drying.
Drying Method Advantages Disadvantages
Laying Flat Prevents stretching and maintains shape Takes longer to dry
Tumble Drying Very fast (AVOID) Can cause severe shrinkage and damage to fibers
Hanging Convenient (AVOID) Can cause stretching and misshaping of the garment

5. Storing Your Cashmere Sweater

Proper storage is essential for maintaining the quality of your cashmere sweaters between wears.

  • Fold, Don’t Hang: Fold your cashmere sweaters neatly and store them in a drawer or on a shelf. Hanging can cause stretching and misshaping.
  • Use Moth Protection: Store your sweaters with cedar chips, lavender sachets, or other moth repellents to protect them from moths and other pests.
  • Store in a Breathable Container: Store your cashmere in a breathable container, such as a cotton storage bag, to protect it from dust and moisture. Avoid storing cashmere in plastic bags, as they can trap moisture and lead to mildew.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your cashmere sweaters remain soft, luxurious, and beautiful for years to come.
