Nicotine Toxicity in Silkworms: Prevention and Management

Nicotine toxicity in silkworms arises from the ingestion of contaminated mulberry leaves or direct exposure to tobacco byproducts, primarily causing harm through the nervous system.

1. Routes of Nicotine Exposure for Silkworms

Silkworms are vulnerable to nicotine poisoning through a few key pathways:

  • Ingestion of Contaminated Leaves: Mulberry leaves grown within a 100 to 150-meter radius of tobacco fields can become contaminated with nicotine. These leaves can retain their toxicity for 30 to 60 days, posing a risk to silkworms.
  • Direct Inhalation: When silkworms are raised near tobacco drying facilities, they may inhale nicotine directly from the air or have the substance settle on their bedding.
  • Contact: Silkworms can absorb nicotine through direct contact with contaminated surfaces, such as tools or hands, during handling.

2. Nicotine Concentration and Its Impact

The severity of nicotine poisoning in silkworms is directly related to the concentration present in their environment or food source. The following table illustrates the effects of varying nicotine levels:

>5 Acute poisoning, leading to rapid and severe symptoms.
1-3 Chronic poisoning with prolonged exposure, resulting in slowed growth, poor cocoon quality, and increased mortality.
<0.1 Generally harmless to silkworms, indicating a safe threshold for their health.

3. Symptoms of Nicotine Poisoning in Silkworms

Silkworms exposed to nicotine can display a range of symptoms, varying with the severity of exposure:

  • Severe Poisoning: Severely affected silkworms will cease eating and moving, lift and bend their front body backward, and exhibit a tightened head and first thoracic section. They may also pass rosary-like feces, shake their upper body vigorously, and expel thick, brown gastric juices before eventually succumbing.
  • Mild Poisoning: Silkworms experiencing milder poisoning will have swollen breasts, reduced activity, loss of appetite, and slight head and chest shaking.

The vulnerability of silkworms to nicotine poisoning changes with age. Smaller silkworms are more susceptible and exhibit symptoms earlier. Full-grown silkworms during feeding periods demonstrate greater resilience to nicotine toxicity.

4. Preventive Measures to Minimize Nicotine Exposure

Several measures can be taken to mitigate the risk of nicotine poisoning in silkworms:

  • Prohibit Intercropping: Avoid growing tobacco within mulberry gardens.
  • Maintain Distance: Ensure a distance of more than 150 meters between mulberry gardens and tobacco fields.
  • Avoid Contamination: Prevent tools and equipment that have come into contact with tobacco from being used for mulberry leaf handling or silkworm rearing.
  • Ban Smoking: Smoking should be prohibited near silkworm rearing and mulberry storage areas.
  • Minimize Tobacco Exposure: When removing flower cores on tobacco plants, perform the process as late as possible and do it shallowly. Harvest lower wilted leaves sequentially as tobacco matures. Harvest tobacco as soon as possible, and dispose of remaining leaves properly to reduce nicotine emissions.
  • Create Barriers: Grow tall crops as barriers between tobacco fields and mulberry gardens to help reduce the volatilization of nicotine.

5. Actions to Take After Nicotine Poisoning

If silkworms exhibit signs of nicotine poisoning:

  • Immediate Action: Move the poisoned silkworms to a ventilated area. If they have not passed away, provide them with fresh, non-toxic mulberry leaves.
  • Isolate: Separate the poisoned silkworms from others to prevent further contamination.
  • Remove and Replace: Remove sand and other contaminated materials from their rearing environment. Immediately replace contaminated mulberry leaves with fresh ones.

By implementing these preventive and responsive measures, silkworm rearers can significantly reduce the risk of nicotine poisoning, leading to healthier silkworms and better-quality silk production, which is essential for products like silk bedding, pillowcases, and pajamas, all provided by companies such as PandaSilk.
