Overview of Mulberry Silkworm Rearing

Silkworm rearing, or sericulture, is the process of raising silkworms for the production of raw silk. This intricate process involves numerous stages, from egg incubation to cocoon harvesting. 1. The Silkworm Rearing Process

Silkworm rearing encompasses several critical steps:

  • Disinfection: Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the rearing house are essential to prevent disease.
  • Egg Incubation: Silkworm eggs are incubated under controlled conditions to ensure synchronized hatching.
  • Ant Harvesting: Newly hatched larvae, known as “ants,” are carefully collected.
  • Mulberry Cultivation and Harvesting: Mulberry leaves are the sole food source for silkworms, requiring careful cultivation and harvesting.
  • Feeding: Silkworms are fed fresh mulberry leaves multiple times a day.
  • Bedding Management: Maintaining clean and dry bedding is crucial for silkworm health.
  • Molting and Dormancy: Silkworms undergo several molts, during which they enter a dormant state.
  • Environmental Control: Temperature, humidity, and ventilation are carefully regulated.
  • Cocoon Harvesting: Mature silkworms spin cocoons, which are then harvested.

The duration of the rearing process varies depending on the silkworm strain and season. Spring and late autumn silkworms take approximately five weeks, while summer and early/mid-autumn silkworms require three to four weeks. Seed cocoon production adds about two weeks for pupation and seed collection.

2. Types of Silkworm Rearing

Silkworm rearing can be categorized based on its purpose:

  • Silk Cocoon Breeding: Focused on producing cocoons for silk reeling.
  • Seed Cocoon Breeding: Aimed at obtaining high-quality silkworm eggs for future generations.

Additionally, silkworms are classified by rearing season:

  • Spring Silkworms: Reared in spring.
  • Summer and Autumn Silkworms: Further divided into summer, early autumn, mid-autumn, and late autumn silkworms.

The number of rearing cycles per year varies by region, influenced by climate and mulberry growth:

3. Historical Development of Sericulture

Sericulture has a long and rich history, particularly in Asia. China boasts the longest history of silkworm rearing, with evidence dating back centuries. Ancient texts like “Fu Silkworm” and “Qi Min Yao Shu” document early sericulture practices. Over time, techniques have been refined, with advancements in understanding the impact of environmental factors, feed, and disease prevention.

4. Environmental Factors in Silkworm Rearing

The rearing environment plays a crucial role in silkworm growth and health:

  • Temperature: The ideal rearing temperature ranges from 20°C to 30°C, varying slightly for different instars. High temperatures accelerate development, while low temperatures slow it down. Temperatures above 30°C and below 20°C should be avoided.
  • Humidity: Maintaining appropriate humidity levels is essential for preventing dehydration and ensuring healthy molting. Humidity levels should generally be between 50% and 90%, avoiding extremes.
  • Ventilation: Adequate ventilation is necessary to remove excess moisture, heat, and harmful gases like carbon dioxide and ammonia. Air velocity between 0.1 and 0.5 meters per second is generally recommended.

5. Silkworm Feed

Mulberry leaves are the exclusive natural food source for silkworms. The quality of mulberry leaves is crucial and varies depending on factors such as tree variety, growing conditions, and leaf maturity. Only fresh, healthy leaves should be used. Damaged or diseased leaves are unsuitable. Proper mulberry storage is essential to prevent spoilage.

6. Silkworm Bedding and Hygiene

Maintaining clean and dry bedding is vital for preventing disease and ensuring optimal growth. Regular cleaning and removal of waste are essential. Proper spacing of silkworms in the rearing beds prevents overcrowding and promotes healthy development.

7. Small and Large Silkworm Rearing Techniques

Different techniques are employed for rearing small and large silkworms:

  • Small Silkworms: Often reared in controlled environments with higher temperature and humidity. Methods include dry-proof paper rearing, kang bed rearing, and platform rearing. Modern techniques utilize small silkworm rearing machines and artificial feeds.
  • Large Silkworms: Rearing focuses on cost-effectiveness and reduced labor. Methods include mulberry branch rearing, outdoor rearing, and ground mulberry rearing.

8. Cocoon Harvesting and Handling

Proper cocoon harvesting and handling are crucial for maintaining cocoon quality. Factors such as temperature, humidity, and ventilation during cocooning significantly impact the final product. Cocoons must be harvested at the optimal time and handled carefully to avoid damage.

9. Disease Prevention and Disinfection

Strict hygiene and disinfection are critical for preventing silkworm diseases. Thorough cleaning of the rearing house and equipment is essential. Appropriate medications should be used judiciously and with specific purpose.

10. Modern Advancements in Sericulture

Modern sericulture has benefited from advancements in understanding the interplay of environmental factors, feed, disease prevention, and silkworm genetics. These advancements have led to improved rearing techniques, increased productivity, and enhanced silk quality.
