The silkworm is a completely metamorphic insect. One generation of it has to go through four completely different developmental stages: eggs, larvae, pupae, and moths. Under normal feeding conditions, it takes 20 to 28 days for the larvae to hatch from eating mulberry leaves to spinning to make cocoons; spinning and cocooning takes about 3 days; then it takes 1 to 2 days to pupate; the pupal stage goes through 10 to 15 days. The pupa then turns into an adult silk moth. On the day of moth formation, male and female moth mate and lay eggs. If they lay non-diapause eggs, the next generation of silkworms can be hatched in about 10 days. In this way, it takes about 40 to 60 days for the silkworm to complete one generation, passing on from generation to generation in the constant metamorphosis. So, what are the specific forms of silkworm eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults? How does the larval silkworm grow up bit by bit? The following introduces the morphology of silkworm eggs, silkworm chrysalis, silkworm moths and the growth characteristics of silkworms.
Silkworm Eggs
Silkworms reproduce with eggs. Silkworm eggs look like fine-grained sesame seeds, about 1 mm wide and 0.5 mm thick. A female moth can produce 400 to 500 silkworm eggs and 1700 to 2000 silkworm eggs, weighing about 1 gram. The color of silkworm eggs is light yellow or yellow when they are first laid. It changes to light red bean color or red bean color after 1 to 2 days, and then turns to grayish green or purple after 3 to 4 days, and no change occurs. , Called fixed color. The outer layer of the silkworm egg is a hard egg shell with yolk and serous membrane inside. The embryo in the fertilized egg continuously takes in nutrients during the development process and gradually develops into an ant silkworm. It becomes white or light yellow.
Ant Silkworm
When a silkworm hatches from a silkworm egg, its body is brown or russet. It is very small and has many fine hairs. It looks a bit like an ant, so it is called ant silkworm (young silkworm). The ant silkworm is about 2 mm long and 0.5 mm wide. After crawling out of the egg shell, it will eat mulberry leaves in 2 to 3 hours.
Dormancy of Silkworm
Silkworms eat a lot of mulberry, so they grow fast and their body color gradually fades. But its appetite gradually diminished and even fasted completely. It spit out a small amount of silk, fixed its stomach and feet on the silkworm seat, raised its head and chest, and stopped moving, as if falling asleep, called “sleep”. . Sleeping silkworms seem to be still on the outside, but they are preparing for peeling inside their bodies. After removing the old skins, the silkworms grow into a new age, from ant silkworms to silking and cocooning a total of 4 molting times. . Dormancy is one of the growth characteristics of silkworms. Dormancy is an inherited trait of silkworms and is also affected by the environment. Silkworms currently raised in China are four dormant species.
Silkworm Age
Also known as instar, it means that the silkworm is at a certain stage of development. From ant silkworm to the first molting, it is the first instar; after sleeping, it enters the second instar; after the second molting, it enters the third instar; after the third molting, it enters the fourth instar, and the fourth molting is also called hypnotism. After sleeping, it enters the fifth instar. The fifth instar silkworm grows extremely fast, with a body length of 6 to 7 cm and a weight of about 10,000 times the weight of an ant silkworm.
Mature Silkworm
At the end of the fifth instar, the silkworms gradually show the characteristics of maturity: first, the excretion of feces changes from hard to soft, from dark green to leaf green; appetite is reduced, and the amount of mulberry is reduced; the front digestive tube is empty, and the chest is transparent. ; Then stop eating completely, the body drive is shortened, the abdomen becomes more transparent, the head and chest of the silkworm are raised, the mouth is spinning, and they swing up and down to find the cocoon place. Such silkworms are called mature silkworms.
Cocoon
People put the mature silkworms in a special container or on a stalk, and the silkworms spun silk and cocooned. Cocooning can be divided into four processes:
- The mature silkworm first spits out the silk, sticks it on the stalk, and then spits the silk to connect the surrounding stalks to form a cocoon scaffold, that is, a cocoon net. The cocoon net does not have a cocoon shape, just some loose and messy layers of cocoon silk as a support for cocoon formation.
- After the silkworm knits the cocoon net, continue to spit out the messy silk circle, thicken the inner layer of the cocoon net, and then spin the silk in an S-shaped manner, and the outline of the cocoon begins to appear, called the cocoon dress. The silk fiber of the cocoon is thin and brittle, the arrangement is very irregular, and the sericin content is also high.
- After the cocoon is formed, the cocoon cavity gradually becomes smaller, and the front and back ends of the silkworm body are bent to the back to form a “C” shape. The silkworm continues to spit out the cocoon silk. The silk spinning method changes from the S-shape to the ∞-shape, and the cocoon layer begins.
- When the silkworm spins a lot of silk and the body shrinks greatly, the head and chest swing speed slows down, and there is no certain rhythm, the silk starts to appear messy, forming a loose and soft layer of cocoon silk, called pupa lining.
Silkworm Chrysalis
The silkworm becomes a pupa after about 4 days after the cocoon is formed. The body shape of a silkworm chrysalis is like a spun, with three body segments: head, chest, and abdomen. The head is very small, with compound eyes and antennae; the chest has pectoral feet and wings; the bulging abdomen has 9 segments. Professional workers can distinguish males and females from the lines and brown spots on the abdomen of silkworm chrysalis. When the silkworm is just pupating, its body color is light yellow, the pupa body is tender and soft, and gradually turns yellow, tan or brown, and the pupa skin becomes hard. After about 12 to 15 days, when the pupa body begins to soften again, and the pupa skin becomes a little wrinkled and earthy brown, it will turn into a moth.
Silk Moth (Adult)
The silk moth is shaped like a butterfly with white scaly hairs, but it has lost the ability to fly due to the two small pairs of wings. The head of the silk moth is small, with bulging compound eyes and antennae; the chest has a pair of thoracic feet and two pairs of wings; the abdomen has no gastropods, and the terminal body segments have evolved into external genitalia. The female moth is large and crawls slowly; the male moth is small, crawls faster, and vibrates quickly, looking for a mate. Generally 3 to 4 hours after mating, female moths can lay fertilized eggs. Silkworm moths (adults) leave behind offspring and die soon after. The eggs laid by the silkworm moth→egg hatching→pupa→moth, this is the life cycle of silkworm.
