Silk is a continuous long fiber coagulated by the secretion of silk liquid when the cocoon is formed. It is also called “natural silk“. Like wool, it is one of the earliest animal fibers used by humans. According to their feeding habits and breeding environment, Silkworms can be divided into mulberry silkworm, tussah silkworm, eri silkworm, and celestial silkworm. The silk fibers drawn from a single cocoon is called cocoon silk, which is made of two single fibers bonded and covered by sericin. The silk from which the sericin is removed is called refined silk. Using them as raw materials, they can be processed into various types of fabrics using looms.

Silk fiber is a protein fiber with an elliptical cross-section. Sericin and silk fibroin are the main components, of which silk fibroin accounts for about 3/4 and sericin about 1/4. Sericin and silk fibroin are composed of 18 kinds of amino acids and contain about 97% pure protein. Sericin is a globular protein with good water solubility. Dissolving silk in hot water for degumming and scouring is to take advantage of this property of sericin. Because of the different amino acid composition of sericin and silk fibroin, silk fibroin is fibrin and sericin is globulin. The length of silk spit by a silkworm can reach more than 1000 meters. Since the mulberry silk is not polluted during the production process from mulberry sericulture to silk reeling, it is a green product that the world respects. Because it is a protein fiber, it is a porous material, has good air permeability and excellent moisture absorption, and is known as the “fiber queen” by the world.

Mulberry silk is not only the most important raw material for silk weaving, but also can be used to make artificial blood vessels. Silk and the keratin and collagen of the human body are the same protein, and the structure is very similar. Therefore, it has excellent human biocompatibility. The mulberry silk artificial blood vessel does not cause allergies or carcinogenesis in the body, and it can also be connected with the flesh and blood of the living body to grow into the outer wall and inner membrane like real blood vessels. China began to develop mulberry silk artificial blood vessels as early as 1957, and tried to use them in clinical trials. At present, various types of artificial blood vessels can be produced.

Mulberry silk can also be developed into many high-tech by-products. After the mulberry silk is degummed, dissolved, and purified by dialysis, it can be made into a pure silk fibroin solution. The silk fibroin solution is placed in a plastic mold, dried to form a film, and finally sterilized by Cobalt-60 radiation to form a “silk fibroin” membrane”. The film is specially used to cover burn wounds and help wound healing. It is also called “artificial skin”. As the mulberry silk contains 18 kinds of amino acids that are of great nutritional value to the human body, people have developed a cosmetic series with silk fibroin as the main raw material.

In 1973, Japan publicly announced a new process for silk to be used in cosmetics. There are two types of silk fibroin used in cosmetics: one is the “silk powder” (or insoluble silk protein) made by directly removing impurities, degumming, washing, and refining silk fibers. However, due to the large molecular weight of this silk powder, It is also insoluble in water and difficult to be absorbed by the skin. The other is to further cleavage the silk fibroin by chemical methods, so that the macromolecules of the long silk protein chains are broken down into shorter protein molecular chains, which are commonly known as silk fibroin peptides, also known as silk peptides.

Mulberry silk can also be made into silk protein for human consumption. The silk fibroin molecules of this jelly tested initially are still made up of larger molecules connected by thousands of amino acids, which are not easily absorbed by the intestinal wall. Therefore, the actinomycete enzyme that can decompose protein is further decomposed into oligopeptide and amino acid powder, and the absorption rate can be greatly improved. Nowadays, foods containing cracked silk powder, such as cakes, biscuits, noodles, jelly, ice cream, beverages, tablets, candies, etc., are already on the market, which are welcomed by consumers. This kind of food contains 18 kinds of amino acids, and the content of fat and carbohydrate is relatively small, so it is regarded as a healthy green food.
