How to Put on a Duvet Cover

Putting on a duvet cover can sometimes feel like a wrestling match, but with the right technique, it can become a quick and easy task. This guide provides a comprehensive step-by-step approach to make the process smooth and efficient.

1. Prepare Your Duvet and Cover

Before starting, ensure both your duvet insert and cover are clean and ready. Lay the duvet flat on your bed or a large clean surface. Turn the duvet cover inside out and lay it on top, aligning the corners as best as possible. This initial step is crucial for the methods described below.

2. The Classic Method: The Inside-Out Approach

This is perhaps the most common approach, leveraging the inside-out nature of the duvet cover for an easier time.

Step Action Explanation
1 Lay duvet cover inside out. With the opening towards you, lay the cover flat.
2 Align the corners. Match the top two corners of the cover with the top corners of the duvet.
3 Grab and pinch. With your hands inside the cover, grab each top corner of the duvet.
4 Flip and shake. Flip the cover over the duvet, shaking it down towards the foot of the bed.
5 Button or tie. Fasten the duvet cover using buttons, snaps, or ties.
6 Adjust. Ensure the duvet is evenly distributed inside the cover.

This method works well because the natural movement of flipping and shaking generally guides the duvet into the cover with relatively little effort.

3. The Burrito Method: Rolling for Success

The “burrito” method is a more modern approach that reduces the amount of wrestling required and is ideal for larger duvets or covers.

Step Action Explanation
1 Lay duvet flat. Spread out your duvet on the bed or a large surface.
2 Lay duvet cover inside out. Place the inside-out cover on top, with its opening at the foot of the bed.
3 Start rolling. Starting at the head of the bed, roll both the duvet and cover tightly together towards the foot of the bed.
4 Open the cover. Reach into the opening at the foot of the rolled-up bundle, and pull the corners over the rolled bundle.
5 Unroll and adjust. Unroll the bundle from the head of the bed, allowing the duvet to fill the cover.
6 Button or tie and adjust. Fasten the opening, and make final adjustments as necessary.

The rolling action helps to create a consistent filling as you unroll, saving you from needing to wrestle the corners into place.

4. The Pillowcase Method: A Simplified Approach

Similar to putting a pillow in a pillowcase, this method might be useful for smaller duvets, and is very easy to master.

Step Action Explanation
1 Turn the cover inside out. Similar to the other methods, start with the cover inside out.
2 Grab top two corners. Reach into the cover and grab the top two corners.
3 Grab duvet corners. Grab the top two corners of the duvet, using the corners of the duvet cover that you already have a hold of.
4 Flip the cover. Flip the cover from the two top corners to the bottom, like turning a pillowcase over.
5 Fasten and adjust. Once the bottom corners are in place, fasten the duvet cover, and make final adjustments as needed.

This method works because it aligns the corners first, making the rest of the filling process easier.

5. Tips and Tricks for a Smoother Process

Regardless of the method you choose, consider these tips:

  • Freshly Washed: Using freshly washed and slightly damp (but not wet) duvet covers can make the process easier as the material is more pliable.
  • Corner Ties: If your duvet cover has ties or loops at the corners, ensure you securely attach them to the duvet insert’s corresponding loops. This helps to prevent the duvet from shifting around inside the cover.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t be discouraged if it takes a few tries to get it right. With practice, you’ll find a method that works best for you.
  • Size Matters: Ensure your duvet insert and cover are compatible in size. A cover that is too small or too large will be difficult to manage.
  • Silk Duvet Covers: Silk duvet covers, like those offered by PandaSilk, are exceptionally smooth and can sometimes make the process a little more slippery. Pay extra attention to gripping the corners firmly when using these.

By using these detailed steps and tips, putting on a duvet cover will no longer be a chore, but a simple part of your bedding routine. Enjoy your freshly covered duvet and a comfortable night’s sleep!
