How to Shrink a Wool Jacket

by Elizabeth / Tuesday, 11 October 2022 / Published in Textile Knowledge
Wool Jacket

Shrinking a wool jacket can be a tricky process, but with the right approach, it’s possible to achieve the desired fit. Understanding wool’s properties and taking a controlled approach are key to success. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you shrink your wool jacket effectively.

Understanding Wool and Shrinkage

Wool fibers are naturally prone to shrinking due to their structure. They have scales that interlock when exposed to moisture and agitation. This process, known as felting, causes the fibers to compact, resulting in shrinkage. The amount of shrinkage depends on the wool’s weave, thickness, and the method used.

1. Assessing Your Jacket

Before attempting to shrink your wool jacket, it’s important to assess its current state and desired outcome:

  • Material Composition: Is your jacket 100% wool or a blend? Blends with synthetic fibers will shrink less than pure wool.
  • Size Adjustment: How much do you want to shrink your jacket? A little or a full size? Knowing this will help guide your shrinking process.
  • Jacket Construction: Check for lining, padding, or other structural elements. These might be affected differently by shrinkage.

2. Preparation for Shrinking

Before you start the shrinking process, make sure you have everything you need:

Item Purpose
Large Basin or Tub To soak the jacket in warm water.
Warm Water To encourage the wool fibers to contract.
Towels To absorb excess water after the shrinking process.
Timer To keep track of the soaking time.
Optional Detergent If you wish to gently clean your jacket during the process.

3. The Warm Water Soak Method

This is the most common and straightforward method to shrink a wool jacket:

  1. Fill the Basin: Fill your basin or tub with warm water. The water should be warm, not hot, as very high temperatures can cause uncontrolled shrinkage. Aim for a temperature slightly above lukewarm.
  2. Submerge the Jacket: Gently submerge your wool jacket into the warm water, making sure it is fully saturated.
  3. Soak: Allow the jacket to soak for about 30 minutes. If you’re aiming for significant shrinkage, you may extend the soak time to an hour but check the jacket periodically.
  4. Agitation (Optional): For more targeted shrinkage, gently agitate the jacket in the water by moving it around. Do not rub or wring, as this may lead to uneven shrinkage.
  5. Remove and Press: Carefully remove the jacket from the water, and lightly press it between two towels to remove excess moisture. Avoid wringing the jacket.
  6. Air Dry: Lay the jacket flat on a clean, dry towel or drying rack, allowing it to air dry naturally. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or using a dryer, as these can lead to excessive and uneven shrinkage.
  7. Check Fit: Once the jacket is completely dry, try it on to check if the desired shrinkage has been achieved. Repeat the process if needed, but be careful not to over-shrink.

4. Using a Washing Machine (Use with Caution)

While not recommended for fine wools or delicate jackets, a washing machine can be used if your goal is a more significant shrinkage:

  1. Cool Wash Cycle: Set your washing machine to a cool or warm (not hot) delicate cycle. Use a gentle detergent if you wish to wash the jacket simultaneously.
  2. Minimize Agitation: Ensure the spin cycle is set to the lowest setting or even turned off, and the agitation is minimal.
  3. Careful Dry: Remove the jacket immediately after the wash cycle and press out excess water with towels, then lay it flat to air dry. Avoid the dryer, as it may cause uncontrolled shrinkage.
  4. Test the Fit: After the jacket is completely dry, test the fit to see if the desired shrinkage has been achieved. If necessary, the process can be repeated once.

5. Targeted Shrinking

If you need to shrink only specific areas of the jacket, such as the sleeves or the body, try these techniques:

  • Steam: Gently steam the targeted area with a steamer. Then, carefully press the area while it is still slightly damp with your hands to encourage shrinkage.
  • Damp Cloth and Iron: Place a damp cloth over the area you wish to shrink, and use a warm iron to press down. The steam from the damp cloth will assist in shrinkage.

6. Important Considerations

  • Test a Small Area: Always test your chosen method on an inconspicuous area, such as an inside seam, first to see how the fabric reacts.
  • Gradual Shrinkage: Shrinking wool is a gradual process. It’s better to shrink a small amount at a time rather than over-shrinking.
  • Uneven Shrinkage: Be mindful that some methods may cause uneven shrinkage if not applied carefully.
  • Professional Help: If your jacket is very expensive or delicate, consider having it altered by a professional tailor.

7. Maintaining Your Shrunken Jacket

Once your wool jacket has been shrunk, proper care will help it maintain its new size:

  • Gentle Cleaning: Hand wash the jacket in cool water using a mild detergent or have it professionally cleaned.
  • Air Dry: Always air dry your wool jacket flat, away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Proper Storage: Store your jacket on a hanger in a cool, dry place.

By following these steps, you can successfully shrink your wool jacket to achieve a better fit, taking extra care to avoid damaging the material.
