How to Store Cashmere Sweaters

by Elizabeth / Wednesday, 12 October 2022 / Published in Textile Knowledge

Cashmere, known for its exquisite softness and warmth, requires special care, particularly when it comes to storage. Unlike more resilient fabrics, cashmere is delicate and susceptible to damage from moths, improper folding, and lack of breathability. Following the guidelines below will help you preserve your beloved cashmere pieces.

1. Clean Before Storing

Before placing your cashmere sweaters into storage, make sure they are clean. Moths are attracted to food particles, body oils, and perfumes, which can linger on clothing. Even if a sweater appears clean, invisible residues can make it a prime target for pests.

  • Washing: Gently hand wash or machine wash on a delicate cycle with a mild detergent designed for delicate fabrics. Use cool water to prevent shrinkage.
  • Drying: Avoid wringing or twisting. Instead, gently press out excess water and lay the sweater flat on a clean, dry towel or drying rack. Reshape the garment while it’s damp to help maintain its original shape. Do not use a machine dryer as the heat will cause shrinkage.

2. Fold, Don’t Hang

Hanging cashmere sweaters can cause them to lose their shape due to the weight of the knit pulling down on the shoulders. Always fold your cashmere sweaters for storage. Here’s how:

  • Step 1: Lay Flat: Lay the sweater face down on a flat surface.
  • Step 2: Fold Arms Inward: Fold the arms towards the center of the sweater, parallel to the body.
  • Step 3: Fold in Half or Thirds: Depending on the length of the sweater, fold it in half or in thirds, bringing the hem up towards the neck.
  • Step 4: Smooth Folds: Smooth out any wrinkles with your hand to maintain a neat fold.

3. Choose the Right Storage Containers

Using the correct storage containers is vital to protect your cashmere sweaters from dust, pests, and humidity.

Container Type Pros Cons Best Use Case
Cotton Storage Bags Breathable, protects from dust, affordable Offers minimal protection against moths if not used in conjunction with moth repellents, may not provide as much structure Short-term storage, especially for seasonal transition
Cedar Chests/Drawers Natural moth repellent, pleasant scent, adds to home decor Can be expensive, cedar scent may fade over time, requires some maintenance Long-term storage if you have an appropriate space
Plastic Storage Bins Airtight, good protection against moths and moisture May trap moisture, can be bulky, can cause clothes to crease if not properly folded Long-term storage, great for areas where humidity is a concern
Vacuum-Sealed Bags Excellent space-saving, airtight, protects from pests and moisture Can cause creases and compress the delicate fibers, not suitable for frequent use, can be hard to remove wrinkles later Long-term storage only, best for pieces you don’t plan on wearing frequently

4. Protect from Moths

Moths are a cashmere sweater’s greatest enemy. Taking preventative measures is crucial to avoid any damage.

  • Natural Repellents: Consider natural repellents such as cedar blocks, cedar chips, lavender sachets, or dried herbs. Replace these items regularly to maintain effectiveness.
  • Mothballs/Crystals: If you opt for mothballs or crystals, ensure they don’t come into direct contact with your sweaters. Place them in a separate container within your storage space.
  • Regular Inspection: Periodically check your stored sweaters for any signs of moth activity. If you find any damage, isolate the affected garments immediately and treat as needed.
  • Freeze Infested Items: If you suspect a moth infestation, place the garment in a sealed plastic bag and freeze for 48 hours to kill any larvae or eggs.

5. Store in a Cool, Dark, Dry Place

Optimal storage conditions are essential to maintain the integrity of cashmere fibers.

  • Temperature: Store your cashmere sweaters in a cool place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. High temperatures can damage the fibers and cause discoloration.
  • Humidity: Avoid storing cashmere in damp areas, like basements or attics, where moisture can lead to mold and mildew. A dry environment prevents fiber damage.
  • Light: Exposure to sunlight can fade colors and weaken fibers. A dark place such as a closet or a dedicated storage space provides the ideal protection.

6. Re-Fluff Periodically

Even when stored correctly, cashmere can sometimes become a bit flat. Gently shake or lightly brush the sweaters when you take them out of storage to re-fluff the fibers. This will restore its softness and original look.

7. Avoid Overpacking

Don’t overcrowd your storage containers. Cashmere needs room to breathe. Overpacking can lead to creasing and a less-than-ideal shape over time.

By following these detailed steps, you can ensure that your treasured cashmere sweaters remain in excellent condition, ready to provide warmth and elegance whenever you need them. Proper storage is key to the longevity and beauty of these luxurious garments.
