How to Unshrink Merino Wool

by Elizabeth / Tuesday, 11 October 2022 / Published in Textile Knowledge

Merino wool, prized for its softness and warmth, is unfortunately prone to shrinking when subjected to improper washing techniques. However, before you give up on your favorite merino piece, several methods can be employed to help restore it to its original size.

1. Understanding Why Merino Wool Shrinks

Merino wool fibers have scales that, when agitated in hot water, interlock and tighten causing the garment to shrink. The process is accelerated by friction and high heat, making machine washing and drying common culprits. Understanding this mechanism is key to applying the correct unshrinking techniques.

2. The Lukewarm Water and Conditioner Method

This gentle method is often the first attempt at unshrinking. It aims to relax the wool fibers, making them more pliable for stretching.

Steps Description
Fill Basin Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which can worsen the shrinking.
Add Conditioner Add a small amount of a gentle hair conditioner or wool wash to the water.
Soak Garment Submerge the merino wool garment fully in the water, ensuring it’s saturated.
Soak Duration Let the garment soak for about 30 minutes. This allows the conditioner to relax the fibers.
Remove and Drain Gently remove the garment from the water, being careful not to wring or twist it.
Prepare for Stretching Lay the garment flat on a clean, absorbent towel.

3. Stretching Technique

Stretching needs to be done gently and incrementally to avoid damaging the fibers.

Steps Description
Initial Stretching Start by gently stretching the garment in all directions, particularly focusing on the areas that have shrunk the most.
Roll in Towel Roll the garment up in the towel to remove excess water. This prevents over stretching from the garment’s weight.
Lay Flat to Dry Lay the garment flat on a clean, dry towel or mesh rack and continue to gently stretch every few hours.
Air Drying Allow the garment to air dry completely. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources.
Monitor and Repeat If the garment has not reached the desired size, repeat the soak and stretching process after it is fully dry.

4. Using a Steamer

If the garment is not responding to the water and conditioner approach, steam can be used to further relax the fibers, making it easier to stretch.

Steps Description
Prepare Steamer Fill a handheld steamer with water and allow it to heat up.
Steam the Garment Hold the steamer a few inches from the garment and gently steam the areas you want to stretch.
Stretch Simultaneously While the garment is warm and damp from the steam, gently stretch it in all directions.
Lay Flat to Dry Once the desired stretch is achieved, lay the garment flat to air dry, preferably on a mesh rack.
Repeat if needed If more stretching is needed, repeat the steaming and stretching process after the garment is dry.

5. Preventative Measures for the Future

The best way to avoid shrinking merino wool is to treat it with extra care during washing.

Method Description
Hand Washing Always hand wash your merino wool garments in cool or lukewarm water with a wool-specific detergent.
Avoid Hot Water Hot water is the main culprit of shrinkage, always use cool to lukewarm water.
Gentle Agitation Do not rub, twist, or wring the garment during washing or drying.
Flat Drying Lay your garment flat to dry, preferably on a mesh rack or a towel.
Read Care Labels Always consult the care label on your garment for specific washing instructions.
Use Wool Detergent Use a mild detergent specifically formulated for wools to maintain the fibers and avoid damage.

By understanding the causes of shrinkage and applying these unshrinking techniques, you can often restore your favorite merino wool garments back to their original size and keep them looking great for years to come. Careful washing and handling will ensure the longevity of these delicate items.
