How to Remove Gum From Wool

by Elizabeth / Tuesday, 11 October 2022 / Published in Textile Knowledge

Gum on wool can be a frustrating experience, but with the right approach, you can often remove it without damaging the delicate fabric. This guide outlines several effective methods to tackle this sticky situation.

1. Freezing the Gum

This method is generally considered the safest for wool as it avoids the use of chemicals or heat that could potentially damage the fibers.

  • Step 1: Prepare the Area: Place a piece of cardboard or a clean towel under the affected area of the wool garment to protect the surface beneath.
  • Step 2: Freeze the Gum: Apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables directly to the gum for 15-20 minutes. This will harden the gum, making it brittle and easier to remove.
  • Step 3: Remove the Gum: Once frozen, gently scrape off the hardened gum using a blunt object such as a butter knife, spoon, or the edge of a credit card. Be careful not to snag or pull on the wool fibers.

2. Using Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol can effectively dissolve gum, but it’s crucial to test it on an inconspicuous area of the wool first to ensure it doesn’t cause discoloration or damage.

  • Step 1: Apply Rubbing Alcohol: Dip a cotton ball or a clean cloth in rubbing alcohol and gently dab it onto the gum.
  • Step 2: Allow it to Dissolve: Let the rubbing alcohol sit for a few minutes to allow the gum to soften.
  • Step 3: Remove the Gum: Gently scrape off the softened gum with a blunt object.
  • Step 4: Blot the Area: Blot the area with a clean, dry cloth to absorb any remaining alcohol.

3. Employing Peanut Butter

While it may sound unusual, peanut butter can be surprisingly effective at removing gum from fabrics.

  • Step 1: Apply Peanut Butter: Apply a generous amount of peanut butter to the gum.
  • Step 2: Work the Peanut Butter: Gently massage the peanut butter into the gum. The oils in the peanut butter will help to break down the gum’s adhesive properties.
  • Step 3: Remove the Peanut Butter and Gum: Use a clean cloth or paper towel to wipe away the peanut butter and the dissolved gum.
  • Step 4: Clean the Area: Wash the affected area with a mild detergent and warm water.

4. Utilizing Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise, like peanut butter, contains oils that can help to dissolve gum.

  • Step 1: Apply Mayonnaise: Apply a layer of mayonnaise to the gum.
  • Step 2: Let it Sit: Allow the mayonnaise to sit for 15-20 minutes.
  • Step 3: Remove the Mayonnaise and Gum: Wipe away the mayonnaise and the dissolved gum with a clean cloth or paper towel.
  • Step 4: Clean the Area: Wash the affected area with a mild detergent and warm water.

5. Seeking Professional Help

If the above methods fail to remove the gum, or if you are concerned about damaging the wool, it’s best to seek professional help from a dry cleaner specializing in wool garments.

Important Considerations:

  • Test any method on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t cause any damage to the wool.
  • Avoid excessive rubbing or scrubbing, as this can damage the delicate wool fibers.
  • Always air-dry wool garments to prevent shrinkage.
  • For stubborn gum, repeat the chosen method as needed.

By following these tips and choosing the most suitable method for your specific situation, you can effectively remove gum from wool and preserve the integrity of your cherished garments.
