How to Shrink Wool Gloves

by Elizabeth / Tuesday, 11 October 2022 / Published in Textile Knowledge
Wool Gloves

Wool gloves, while warm and cozy, can sometimes stretch out over time, losing their snug fit. Fortunately, there are ways to carefully shrink them back to their original size. This guide provides detailed instructions on how to shrink wool gloves safely and effectively.

Understanding Wool and Shrinkage

Wool fibers are naturally prone to shrinking due to their structure. The fibers have scales that interlock when exposed to heat and agitation, causing the fabric to contract. However, excessive heat or harsh treatment can lead to irreversible damage, resulting in overly stiff or felted gloves. Therefore, a gentle approach is crucial.

Methods for Shrinking Wool Gloves

There are two primary methods for shrinking wool gloves: using heat and using agitation. Combining both methods requires extra caution.

Method 1: Using Heat (Recommended for Light Shrinkage)

This method is best for slightly stretched gloves needing minimal shrinkage.

  1. Prepare a basin: Fill a clean basin with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, as it can cause excessive shrinkage.
  2. Submerge the gloves: Fully submerge the wool gloves in the lukewarm water, ensuring they are thoroughly saturated.
  3. Soak: Let the gloves soak for about 30 minutes. This allows the fibers to relax.
  4. Remove excess water: Gently remove the gloves from the basin and lightly squeeze out excess water. Do not wring or twist them, as this can distort their shape.
  5. Use a towel: Lay the gloves flat on a clean, dry towel and roll the towel up to absorb more moisture.
  6. Air dry: Lay the gloves flat on a drying rack or a clean, dry surface away from direct heat or sunlight. Reshape them gently to their desired form while they are still damp.
  7. Check for shrinkage: Once the gloves are completely dry, try them on to check the fit. If further shrinkage is needed, repeat the process with slightly warmer water.

Method 2: Gentle Agitation (For More Noticeable Shrinkage)

This method is suitable for gloves that need more significant size reduction. It requires careful monitoring to prevent over-shrinking.

  1. Prepare a basin: Fill a clean basin with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent specifically designed for wool or delicates.
  2. Submerge and agitate gently: Submerge the gloves in the soapy water and gently agitate them with your hands for a few minutes. Avoid vigorous scrubbing or twisting.
  3. Soak briefly: Let the gloves soak for no more than 10-15 minutes.
  4. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse the gloves thoroughly with lukewarm water until all traces of detergent are gone.
  5. Remove excess water: Gently squeeze out excess water and use a towel to absorb more moisture as described in Method 1.
  6. Air dry: Lay the gloves flat to dry, reshaping them as needed.

Comparing Shrinkage Methods

Feature Method 1: Using Heat (Soaking) Method 2: Gentle Agitation
Shrinkage Level Light Moderate
Risk of Over-Shrinking Low Medium
Time Required Longer (soaking time) Shorter
Best For Minor adjustments More significant changes

Preventing Future Stretching

  • Proper Storage: Store your wool gloves flat or loosely folded in a drawer or container. Avoid hanging them, as this can cause them to stretch out of shape.
  • Gentle Washing: When washing wool gloves, always hand wash them in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Avoid machine washing or using hot water.
  • Careful Drying: Always air dry wool gloves flat. Never put them in a dryer, as the high heat will cause them to shrink excessively and potentially felt.

By following these instructions, you can effectively shrink your wool gloves to achieve a better fit while preserving their quality and warmth.
