Box Rearing of Silkworms

Box Rearing of Silkworm

Box rearing is a popular and efficient method for raising silkworms, offering several advantages in terms of control over environmental conditions and ease of management. This article provides a detailed guide to box rearing, covering all crucial aspects of the process.

1. Advantages of Box Rearing

Box rearing offers several key benefits compared to traditional methods:

  • Improved Hygiene: Boxes are easier to clean and disinfect, reducing the risk of disease outbreaks.
  • Controlled Environment: Temperature, humidity, and ventilation can be more easily regulated within boxes.
  • Efficient Space Utilization: Boxes can be stacked, maximizing space utilization.
  • Simplified Management: Feeding, cleaning, and observation are simplified.
  • Better Yield: Controlled conditions often lead to higher silk yields.

2. Materials Required for Box Rearing

Setting up a box rearing system requires specific materials:

Material Description
Rearing Boxes Shallow boxes made of wood, plastic, or cardboard. Size depends on the scale of rearing.
Rearing Stands Structures to hold the boxes, allowing for air circulation.
Feeding Trays Trays placed inside the boxes to hold the mulberry leaves.
Chopsticks/Tweezers For handling young silkworms.
Thermometer/Hygrometer To monitor temperature and humidity.
Disinfectant For cleaning and sanitizing the boxes and equipment.
Netting or Mesh To cover boxes and prevent silkworms from escaping, especially in later instars.

3. Preparing the Rearing Environment

Proper preparation of the rearing environment is crucial for successful silkworm rearing:

  • Cleaning and Disinfection: Thoroughly clean and disinfect the rearing boxes, stands, and other equipment.
  • Temperature Control: Maintain optimal temperature ranges. Newly hatched silkworms (1st instar) need around 28-30°C (82-86°F), gradually decreasing to 24-25°C (75-77°F) by the 5th instar.
  • Humidity Control: Maintain relative humidity between 70-80% for younger instars and 60-70% for older instars.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent the buildup of moisture and harmful gases.

4. Feeding the Silkworms

Proper feeding is essential for healthy silkworm growth and silk production:

  • Leaf Quality: Use fresh, high-quality mulberry leaves. The leaves should be clean, free from pesticides, and of the appropriate maturity for the silkworm instar.
  • Leaf Preparation: Chop the leaves into small pieces for young silkworms and larger pieces for older ones.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed the silkworms regularly, typically 4-5 times a day. Ensure that there is always fresh food available.
  • Leaf Distribution: Distribute the leaves evenly in the feeding trays.

5. Managing the Rearing Boxes

Proper management of the rearing boxes is vital for preventing disease and ensuring optimal growth:

  • Cleaning: Remove uneaten leaves and excrement (frass) regularly to maintain hygiene.
  • Spacing: As the silkworms grow, provide more space by transferring them to larger boxes or dividing them into multiple boxes to prevent overcrowding.
  • Molting: During molting (ecdysis), silkworms become inactive. Avoid disturbing them during this period.
  • Bed Cleaning: After each molt, clean the boxes thoroughly to remove shed skins and frass.

6. Cocoon Formation and Harvesting

When the silkworms are ready to spin their cocoons, they will become translucent and start wandering. Provide them with a suitable mounting frame or rotary frame within the box:

  • Mounting Frame: These frames provide a structure for the silkworms to attach their cocoons.
  • Cocoon Harvesting: Harvest the cocoons 7-10 days after they are spun.

7. Disease Prevention and Control

Maintaining hygiene and optimal environmental conditions is crucial for preventing silkworm diseases.

  • Hygiene: Thoroughly clean and disinfect the rearing boxes and equipment regularly.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent the buildup of moisture and harmful gases.
  • Quarantine: Isolate any sick silkworms to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Consult Experts: If disease outbreaks occur, consult with sericulture experts for appropriate treatment. If using commercial solutions, consider products from reputable suppliers like PandaSilk if available.

By following these guidelines, you can effectively utilize box rearing to achieve healthy silkworm growth and high-quality silk production.
