How to Put a Duvet Cover on Your Comforter

Putting a duvet cover on your comforter can sometimes feel like wrestling an octopus. The corners never seem to align, and you often end up inside the cover, flailing around. But with a few simple techniques, this task can become much easier. This guide will walk you through two popular methods: the “inside-out” method and the “roll” or “burrito” method.

Why Use a Duvet Cover?

Before we dive into the how-to, let’s briefly discuss why using a duvet cover is beneficial:

  • Protection: It protects your comforter from stains, dirt, and wear and tear.
  • Easy Cleaning: Instead of washing your bulky comforter, you can simply remove and wash the duvet cover.
  • Style: Duvet covers come in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and fabrics, allowing you to easily change the look of your bedroom.

What You’ll Need:

  • Your comforter
  • Your duvet cover

Method 1: The Inside-Out Method

This is a classic and reliable method.

  1. Turn the Duvet Cover Inside Out: Lay the duvet cover flat on your bed, inside out. The opening should be facing you.
  2. Lay the Comforter on Top: Place the comforter on top of the inside-out duvet cover, aligning the corners.
  3. Match the Corners: Starting at one corner, reach inside the duvet cover and grab the corresponding corner of the comforter. Hold them together firmly.
  4. Repeat for All Corners: Repeat step 3 for the remaining three corners. You should now have all four corners of the comforter held within the corresponding corners of the duvet cover.
  5. Shake It Out: Holding the matched corners firmly, shake the duvet cover down over the comforter. This will help the rest of the comforter fall into place.
  6. Button or Zip Up: Close the duvet cover using the buttons, snaps, or zipper.
  7. Fluff and Adjust: Give the duvet a good fluff to distribute the comforter evenly inside.

Method 2: The Roll/Burrito Method

This method is particularly useful for larger or heavier comforters.

  1. Lay the Duvet Cover Inside Out: Lay the duvet cover inside out on your bed, opening facing you.
  2. Lay the Comforter on Top: Place the comforter on top of the inside-out duvet cover, aligning the corners.
  3. Starting at the Bottom (Open End): Starting at the open end of the duvet cover, begin rolling both the duvet cover and the comforter together tightly, like a burrito.
  4. Reach Inside: Once you’ve rolled it up to the top, reach inside the open end of the duvet cover and grab the top two corners of the comforter.
  5. Flip and Unroll: Pull the duvet cover over the rolled comforter, essentially flipping it right side out as you unroll.
  6. Button or Zip Up: Close the duvet cover using the buttons, snaps, or zipper.
  7. Fluff and Adjust: Give the duvet a good fluff to distribute the comforter evenly inside.

Tips for Success

  • Smooth Surface: Work on a clean, flat surface like your bed.
  • Corner Ties: If your duvet cover and comforter have corner ties, use them! They will help keep everything in place.
  • Patience: Don’t rush the process. Taking your time will prevent frustration.
  • Practice: Like any new skill, it gets easier with practice.

By following these simple steps, you can easily put a duvet cover on your comforter and enjoy a freshly made bed in no time.
